Our Story

Our foundation was established in February 2018 to help improve the quality of lives of disadvantaged families in northern Sri Lanka, which was affected by three decades of war against terrorists.

There are about 27 war-affected and resettled villages (9000 families), especially in the economically disadvantaged districts of Mullativu and Vavuniya of the Northern Province. There are 6000 families (2000 school children) within 21 villages of Welioya, Mullativu Districts. These families suffer through extreme poverty resulted from a lack of stable means of living. Their income is predominantly based on farming and hard labour.  The war which spanned for 3 decades massively impacted these remote northern villagers, crippling their mental and physical health. As a result, their attitude towards quality of life has shifted to something quite different from what the majority of Sri Lankans experience.

Impact Stories

Pushpalatha was a manual labourer since she was was 18

She had multiple failed relationships and had abusive partners and the current partner is now in jail serving time for 5 years. She has 3 children. She lives with her elderly mother and her son; struggling to support her family she approached us for support.

In March/April 2020, we launched a vocational training program to empower women like Pushpalatha to train for sewing skills enabling her to be self-employed. She now sells clothes, purses, bags, and rugs to the local market. We work with women like Pushpalatha to encourage them to be confident self-empowered women.

A Brighter Future — For Welioya Children

As we saw a massive gap of IT facilities and lack of skilled teachers (or no teachers) to teach core curriculum subjects we launched our “CYGNUS Learning Centre” with the aim to enable wider Welioya community learn computer skills as most of them who has not touched a computer. Moreover, with the generous support from skilled teachers from across the world (financial contributors like you) we were able to provide children a great opportunity to expand their horizon. Now they will have the chance to learn the core curriculum from highly trained and skilled teachers like children from the core cities like Colombo/Kandy.
